It was erected in 1931 under the orders of president Pascual Ortiz Rubio. The statue from which the fountain receives its moniker dates back to 1908 and is the work of the sculptor Enrique Guerra. The sculpture was placed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1910, but when the building was demolished, the piece was stored for years, until it found its new home in Chapultepec. The fountain is part of a multilayered landscape: at the forefront stands David with his slingshot, further back towers The Templanza sculpture, and behind it, the Ahuehuete known as “El Sargento” and the Tribuna Monumental.
