This wooden sculpture was donated by Canada in 1960 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence. It displays the vibrant colors characteristic of carvings made by Indigenous peoples of the northwestern Canadian coast, who depict their history and lineage through such works.
The Totem expresses the relationship between Indigenous communities and the mysterious forces of nature. In 2014, to mark the 70th anniversary of Mexico–Canada relations, the monument was restored through a collaboration between the Embassy of Canada in Mexico and the Government of Mexico City via the Ministry of the Environment.
