Fuente Nezahualcóyotl

The Monumental Fountain of Nezahualcóyotl is a treasure with a pre-Columbian appearance, inaugurated in 1956. It is the work of sculptor Luis Ortiz Monasterio and covers an L-shaped surface of 1,250 m².

Through eight bas-relief scenes, the fountain narrates the life of Nezahualcóyotl, Lord of Texcoco, from his birth in 1402 to his death in 1473. The scenes depict significant moments such as his birth, the death of Ixtlilxóchitl, the dream of Tezozómoc, the conquest of Azcapotzalco, the formation of the Triple Alliance, the introduction of Chapultepec’s water to Tenochtitlán, the coronation of Nezahualpilli, and his death.

At the center of the fountain rises the figure of the tlatoani, carved in black Xaltocan stone.
