Water Mirror

Located next to Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, the Water Mirror was designed by architect Mario Schjetnan as part of the Master Plan for the First Section of Chapultepec Park. In 2008, it received the Honor Award for General Design.

Due to the deterioration of its hydraulic and electrical infrastructure, and thanks to the support of HSBC, a comprehensive restoration project is being carried out by Grupo de Diseño Urbano (GDU) and executed by CENTRO DÍA. The project replaces the mechanical system with an artificial wetland system.

This approach significantly reduces the need for pumping and electrical equipment, creating a system that naturally remains in balance through slow-flowing aquatic vegetation.

Environmental Benefits:

  • Reduction in electricity consumption: from 100,000 kWh to 8,000 kWh per year
  • Reduction in emissions: from 40 t CO₂ to 3.4 t CO₂ per year
  • Additional carbon capture by wetlands: 4.2 t CO₂ per year

With this intervention, the Water Mirror becomes a resilient, efficient, and sustainable landscapewithin Chapultepec Park.
