This market owes its name to the former tramway track switch (cambio de vía) located along what used to be Avenida de los Madereros.

Inaugurated on August 5, 1955, it has become a symbol of identity for the western area of Mexico City.

In August 2023, it was reopened after undergoing rehabilitation work.
