These enormous trees, native to California, can live for thousands of years. Though that time frame is considerable, writes photographer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bethmoon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beth Moon<\/a>\u00a0in her book,\u00a0<i>Ancient Skies, Ancient Trees<\/i>, \u201ccompared to the age of the stars above, it is not even a blink of an eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section text\">\n<p>A self-taught photographer with a fine art background, Moon has been photographing trees for 20 years. She spent much of that time shooting on film and then processing her images using a 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century black-and-white method called platinum palladium printing. For more than a decade she photographed trees all over the world from sunrise to sunset.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4104\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chapultepec.org.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-04-29-a-las-14.06.55.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1021\" height=\"661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chapultepec.org.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-04-29-a-las-14.06.55.png 1021w, https:\/\/www.chapultepec.org.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-04-29-a-las-14.06.55-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/www.chapultepec.org.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-04-29-a-las-14.06.55-768x497.png 768w, https:\/\/www.chapultepec.org.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-04-29-a-las-14.06.55-600x388.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1021px) 100vw, 1021px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chapultepec.org.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-04-29-a-las-14.07.43-1024x606.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"444\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section text\">\n<p>But then Moon came across a scientific study that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/27735807?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggests a correlation<\/a>between tree growth and galactic cosmic radiation. \u201cAs I thought about it,\u201d she says, \u201cit made so much sense; you know the sun is a star anyway\u2014so why wouldn\u2019t there be this very strong correlation with starlight at night as well as our sun during the day?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section text\">\n<p>The idea for her project, Diamond Nights, was born. Over the next three and a half years Moon traveled around the United States and also to several other countries, including England, Italy, Namibia, and Botswana, documenting ancient baobabs, junipers, sequoias, and more under skies blanketed in stars. Her mission was simple: Find out where the world\u2019s darkest places overlap with the world\u2019s oldest trees, go there, and make beautiful photographs. When the two do intersect, the location is often challenging to reach. So Moon hired local guides to help her seek out her woody subjects, which were sometimes in extremely remote areas. \u201cWe would travel all day long never seeing another person, a sign, or even any roads,\u201d she says. It\u2019s a more light-sensitive technique, she says, and results in incredibly vivid images. Planning all her shoots around moonless nights, she wanted each tree to be primarily bathed in starlight, with additional glow from flashlights, for example, as necessary.
